The Utah Utes continue to be a rising force in college athletics. The Utah Utes are among the NCAA’s most athletically successful colleges today. Athletics at the University of Utah really began when the football started in 1892. Their current stadium, Rice-Eccles Stadium, was built in 1998 in the same place as their old stadium, the Rice Stadium. Utah gets their name, the “Utes,” from the Native American tribe called the Ute Tribe. The Ute Tribe was native to Colorado and Utah for centuries before Europeans arrived in America. The University of Utah and the Ute Indian Tribe have recently renewed their naming agreement to allow the university’s sports teams to continue using the name “Utes” as they have been since 1972. They are known for their strong warrior culture with great respect for nature and work for the environment, which helps define their namesake which has played into the rich culture of the sports team at the University of Utah over time as well.
Right now Utah competes in the Pac-12 Conference, they have been since it was announced on June 17, 2010, that the Utes would join the Pac-12 beginning in 2011. They in the Western Athletic Conference. The Utes were the first school to leave the Mountain West Conference since it was formed in 1999. On August 4, 2023, Utah accepted the offer to become a part of the Big 12 Conference which they will start on July 1, 2024.

Since opening its doors in November of 1969, the Huntsman Center has been the home to some of the greatest moments in Utah basketball, gymnastics and volleyball history, as well numerous NCAA Championship events and ancillary events of the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend held in Salt Lake City.
